Brazilian Jazz-Pop Sensation Joćo "JKau" MacDowell Releases Traveling Man CD

Streale Entertainment announces the release of Joćo MacDowell's latest CD, "The Traveling Man and His Music Box" available for purchase now at www.jkau.com.  The site also provides visitors with free music and free video clips.

The acclaimed Brazilian musical artist, Joćo MacDowell, also known as jKau, has been releasing a steady stream of creative music for more than a decade. In the late eighties, his band "Tonton Macoute" was claimed by music critics of Brazil's equivalent of the New York Times -- Folha de Sćo Paulo - as "the most innovative band to come out of the prolific scene of the Brazilian capital." Joćo's musical collaborations range from those with Grammy Award-winning Jim Hamilton (Boyz 2 Men), David Byrne's (Talkin Heads) percussionist Toni Mola, and European cellist phenom Helena Espvall.

His first solo album, "Parece que Existo" (It Seems I Exist), released in 2000, launched the artist into the world music scene. The hot singles, "A Chuva" (The Rain) and "Sexta Feira" (Friday Night) reached first and fourth place, respectively, at the ISON World Underground charts in Australia. The album also received radio play on stations throughout the USA, Brazil, Argentina, France, Italy, Germany, and Hong Kong. Many are singing his praises.

Already, his latest CD "O Caixeiro Viajante e a Caixa de Mśsica" ("The Traveling Man and His Music Box"), which includes both English and Brazilian lyrics, has garnered overwhelming positive reviews. California-based Entro Entertainment praised the album and the artist: "This Brazilian Gem is a wonderful songwriter and master of colorful melodies and tropical images that stem from his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He takes you on a wonderful journey." Jornal da Tarde also waxed ecstatic calling Joćo a "Musical chameleon, courageous experimentalist, craftsman of memorable melodies, and pioneer of the fusion of Brazilian beats and electronics... the singer and instrumentalist is back with an excellent new album."

Recorded in Rio de Janeiro, The Traveling Man and His Music Box features fourteen tracks, among them the hit single "The Rain", as featured on Brazilian MTV. The album was released in Brazil and aimed at both Brazilian and European audiences, but is receiving a strong following in the US. Joćo fuses several musical styles such as bossa nova, reggae, electronic, and traditional Brazilian baićo to arrive at perfect mixes of contemporary and traditional sounds. Joćo now resides in New York and works out of the Philadelphia-based studio Aurum Recording.

"The Traveling Man and His Music Box" is distributed by Tratore in Brazil and is available for sale in the U.S. via Joćo MacDowell's website, www.jkau.com

Acclaimed Brazilian musical artist, jKau, forms band in the U.S.

PHILADELPHIA February 15, 2004.

Brazilian musical artist Joao Kau MacDowell, also known as jKau, is playing with a new band in the U.S. Joao is performing with Swedish cellist Helena Espvall (Silent Movie Orchestra, The Espers), and Jim Hamilton (Boys II Men, Gerald Allston) on percussion. This new ensemble will record an album of original songs in 2004. In a soft warm acoustic atmosphere, jKau's band pays tribute to the Bossa tradition that first brought Brazilian music to larger American audiences.

"In the solo performances I did throughout the USA, as a singer/songwriter, I would find myself playing traditional Brazilian standards. This material shed new light on my own compositions. Suddenly I was writing new songs. Once we added cello and percussion, it became clear that it is an ideal format to present this music to new American audiences." says Joao.

In 2003, the release of his second solo album, O Caixeiro Viajante e a Caixa de Música (The Traveling Madman and The Music Box) garnered overwhelming positive reviews:

"The album is a delicate jewel. A jewel for the ears." (Diario de Maringa).

"Musical chameleon, courageous experimentalist, craftsman of memorable melodies, pioneer of the fusion of Brazilian beats and electronics, the singer and instrumentalist is back with an excellent new album." (Jornal de Brasilia).

"Some of the most pungent songs of our times." (Jornal da Tarde).

"This Brazilian Gem is a wonderful songwriter and master of colorful melodies and tropical images that stem from his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil" (Entrousa.com)

Recorded in Rio de Janeiro in 2002, The Traveling Madman and the Music Box features fourteen tracks, among them the hit single "A Chuva" ("The Rain") featured on Brazilian MTV and nominated for a Latin Grammy. The album was released in Brazil and aimed at both Brazilian and European audiences. J Kau fuses several musical styles, bossa nova, reggae, electronic, and traditional Brazilian baiao, to arrive at perfect mixes of contemporary and traditional sounds. A multitalented artist, jKau has also composed numerous instrumental soundtracks and won major international awards, such as the Lucky Strike Lab prize for contemporary art (2002) and the best music score prize at the International Circus Festival (2001).

Perseverance. Inspired on that word, jKau, born Joao Claudio Mac Dowell, left Brasilia, his hometown in the heart of Brazil and gained the world. In his simple way of facing life jKau has been, little by little, conquering his place under the sun. Talented and charismatic, hi is about to release his second independent album, O Caixeiro Viajante e a Caixa de Música, in English: "The Traveling Madman and The Music Box."

In a fusion of several styles, like bossa nova, reggae, electro and traditional Brazilian baiao, jKau arrives at a perfect result with arrangements that mix in the right measure contemporary and popular sounds. "I believe that between the contemporary academic practices and the repetition of marketing formulas there is still a rich melodic path to be pursued, a means to captivate the emotion of the listener from the most diverse backgrounds and, still, point towards new directions." Philosophizes the artist.

Recorded in Rio de Janeiro, in a one year time span - between March 2002 and March, 2003 - The Traveling Madman and the Music Box arrives at the market with ten tracks, among them the hit single "The Rain", "Drops of Blood" and "Tamandua". An album primarily aimed at Brazilian and European audiences, still features a number of English tracks: Kaleidoscopic Eyes, originally written in English and O Mercador - Headlines (English and Portuguese), as well as one instrumental"Lanterna" and 3 versions of songs included as bonus tracks "Drops of Blood" ("Gotas de Sangue"), "The Rain" ("A Chuva") and "I`ve Seen" ("Ta Vendo Demais").

jKau has been on the road for ten years and has a vast experience as composer of soundtracks. When he started as the vocalist of the band Tonton Macoute, he performed all over Brazil, gathering an impressive folowing that still attends his concerts today, added by a younger audience that became aquainted with his work as a solo artist.

Now is the time for the world to know this Travelling Madman, jKau is ready to spread his music to further horizons. The gems you will find in this Music Box will show you poetry in the melodies of this great dreamer.
